Q3_small

This week, our Staff Favorite Pick features Jace and his dream helmet, the Shoei VFX-W Helmet – K-Dub 3.  Jace works at our retail store in Smithville, MO.  He has been racing hare scrambles since 2006, and has several championships under his belt.  He recently made the decision to step up to a Shoei helmet.

Shoei RF-1100 Review: Put a Price on Your Head

shoei rf1100superherobanner

My head isn’t an easy fit.  I’ve tried out a lot of helmets over the years.  Some fit better than others.  All were either “low budget” or mid-level helmets.  Many saw thousands of miles of use.  Only two were crash tested.  Most recently,  I was hit by a car a couple of weeks before Christmas.  I was wearing a Shoei RF-1100. It was about 10,000 miles earlier that I had… Read More

Shoei VFX-W Dissent – YES PLEASE!

dissentplease

Some days it’s harder than others to resist spending my paycheck at work.  The day we got in our large shipment of Shoei VFX-W Dissent helmets was one of the hardest. I haven’t owned a working car since I started riding in early 2009, so I demand a lot from my helmets.  Not only do I have a head that’s hard to fit well, I spend a lot of time… Read More

Nutrition is the Key to any Adventure, trust me!

We have all heard the adage: Nutrition is the key to a successful diet.  Well, it is true; but, it is also true for a cycling adventure, like the Dirty Kanza 200 (DK200).  When riding your bicycle expending up to 1100 calories an hour for over 15 hours, proper nutrition is required.  Think of it like this; a cold cut combo footlong is 450 calories.  I would have to eat… Read More

It was supposed to be 50 miles

SyllamoOverlook

When I last wrote, I had completed a 65 mile mountain bike ride and was feeling pretty good about my training thus far for the Dirty Kanza 200.  The next big hurdle would be Syllamo’s Revenge on May 19th, 2012.  Here is the race description from the Syllamo’s Revenge website: “Don’t miss this opportunity to test your skills and endurance on the Syllamo Mountain Bike Trail in the beautiful Ozark… Read More

Gift Ideas for the Motorcycle Lover

hero3plus

Motorcycle enthusiasts tend to be passionate about riding.  If they love motorcycles so passionately, you would think they’d be easier to shop for.  But, if you have someone on your holiday list that loves to ride, you probably know how hard it is to find that perfect, relevant, motorcycle-related gift.  Even if you’re a fellow rider yourself, there is no accounting for taste when it comes to riding gear and… Read More

Training for 200 Miles in the Saddle is a Pain in the Butt

TimBonebender6

In January 2012 I signed up for the Dirty Kanza 200 (DK200).  I had decided to commit a portion of the next 6 months to training my body and mind to bicycle 200 miles of Kansas gravel.  Now, how do I train for this event? OK, 200 miles will take me how long to finish?  Well riding at 10 – 13 mph it will take about 15 to 20 hours. … Read More

Adventure; Get Closer to Nature

2012-Specialized-Crux-Disc-Side

Adventure; Get Closer to Nature What is adventure?  Is it better to describe adventure as a thing, or is adventure better explained by telling a story?  Adventure is defined as an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity.  For me, riding a bicycle is an adventure.  Here is a little more from my Dirty Kanza 200 (DK200) adventure.

Watch for Bambi! (and Other Ruthless Dangers of Autumn Motorcycle Riding!)

DEER

It can be easy to let your guard down when riding in the fall. If you’ve been riding all summer, the break from the heat is exhilarating. And, of course, there are all the gorgeous autumn colors. As pleasant as the ride may be, it is important to stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

First Ride Impressions: 2013 Honda Grom 125cc

Employee's wife poses on his Grom in front of our retail store

Honda has been selling this epic little beast overseas as the MSX125 since early 2013.  I’ve had my eye on it since I first heard pre-release rumors of its coming debut this side of the Pond.  Several friends of mine had pre-ordered them as early as July. Last week, one of our employees here at Motorcycle Closeouts bought one.

Gear Review: Caught in the Rain – Fly 2-Piece Rain Suit

Laurie in Fly Rainsuit

Like many of the employees here at MotorcycleCloseouts, I frequently ride to work.  Unlike any other employee, I don’t have a choice; a motorcycle is currently my sole form of transportation.  And unlike more fortunate areas of this country, Kansas City does not have consistently ideal motorcycling weather.  Not only can it be unfriendly to riders in the KC area, it can be unpredictable.
